Tiffany believes in being prepared. She brings a binder to parent-teacher conferences. She once brought a laminated list to a first date. So when she booked her first psychic reading, she searched "questions to ask a psychic" and got to work. By the day of her reading with The Paul Hesch Frequency, she had fortyseven questions on color-coded index cards. Pink was for love. Green was for money. Yellow was for "other." She sat down, squared the stack and read card number one. "What are next week's winning lottery numbers?" "If I had those," Paul said, "I'd be doing this reading from a yacht." Tiffany moved that card to the back. Card number two. "When will I die?" "I don't answer that one. No honest reader does." To the back. Card number three. "What is this rash?" "That's a question for a doctor." Tiffany looked at her stack. Three cards in, she had nothing. She began to suspect she had prepared for the wrong test. "Can I make a suggestion?" Paul said. "Put the cards down for a minute." Tiffany put the cards down. Her hands did not know what to do without them. "The yes or no questions give you one word," Paul said. "Ask me something that starts with 'what.' The first thing that comes to you." Tiffany's mind went blank. All forty-seven questions left the building. What came out of her mouth was not on any card. "What am I so busy getting ready for?"
The room got quiet. "That's the one," Paul said. Then he read for her. He talked about someone in her life she had been preparing to disappoint for years, and a decision she had been organizing instead of making. Tiffany had never written a card for that, in any color. "Okay, how did you know that?" she said. "That's a little freaky." She never did get to cards four through forty-seven. She took them home and put a rubber band around them. For her next reading she brought one card. It was yellow, and it had one question on it. It started with "what."
Life's complicated. A little perspective can help.
