Circle of Salt

[Verse 1] There was somethin' in the old house, I could feel it in the hall A coldness on the stairway and a shadow on the wall The dog wouldn't go upstairs and the baby wouldn't sleep So I went and got the salt box, and I prayed it good and deep [Verse 2] I poured it round the doorways, I poured it round the beds I poured it on the windowsills and said the words Granny said I lit a little sage and let it drift from room to room And I sang a little hymn to chase away the gloom [Chorus] Draw a circle of salt round the ones you love Ask for protection from the light above Paul Hesch'll tell you there ain't nothin' to fear In a circle of salt, only love comes near [Verse 3] Salt's been holy longer than the oldest book of law It's been guardin' ancient doorways, it's been keepin' out the raw It's the sea and it's the earth and it's the tears we cry And there ain't a lowly spirit that's gonna pass it by [Chorus] Draw a circle of salt round the ones you love Ask for protection from the light above Paul Hesch'll tell you there ain't nothin' to fear In a circle of salt, only love comes near [Verse 4] Well that night the house got quiet and the baby slept till dawn The dog went up the staircase and the coldness was gone The morning sun came pourin' in like honey on the floor And peace came back to settle in the old house once more [Verse 5] So if you feel a heaviness, a darkness in your home If you feel like somethin's watchin' when you're sittin' all alone Grab the salt and say a prayer and draw that holy line And you'll be safe and sleepin' sound, and everything'll be fine [Chorus] Draw a circle of salt round the ones you love Ask for protection from the light above Paul Hesch'll tell you there ain't nothin' to fear In a circle of salt, only love comes near
